Titan Thunder & Sevens High Slot Reviews (Quickspin)

As many readers of Online Casinos & Slots will probably already know, Quickspin have been the vehicle for bringing Microgaming slots to the non-Viper Download multi-platform sites for a number of years. In basic terms that means that most flash casinos providing MG games will use Quickspin to convert them.

As expected this factor along with the increasing presence of ‘Mega Sites’ offering in some cases over 1,000 games from multiple software providers has led to Quickspin hosting games from more and more companies like Rabcat for example. This has opened the door for the MG download sites (which hitherto had started looking dated and with limited choice) to have reciprocal arrangements. We can see this now at their download clients that now provide Rabcat’s ‘Castle Builder’ amongst others not created by MG. Obviously, albeit with a slow start MG are going to be offering a bigger choice in future to their download players.  (more…)

The Arrival Of Rival in 2015!

Lion's Roar (Rival)Many players in the US and Canada will be familiar with Rival software but I have never covered the games here at Online Casinos & Slots for a variety of reasons, not least as the sites providing the games have primarily faced the US market. Online gaming is not illegal in the USA but their banks and card companies are forbidden by law to action gambling transactions (with the exception of a few States), thus effectively denying the majority of a potentially huge American market the right to play online.

This didn’t stop offshore casinos offering gaming to the USA though but the European software companies, casinos and poker sites abandoned the market after the government siezed the assets and even arrested some personnel of these companies. (more…)

Slots Psychology

Slots & Psychology

I was sent a link this week to a very interesting interview with Dr. Mark Griffiths who has spent years investigating the psychology of casino games, addictiveness and the connections between the two.

The interview sheds some really interesting light on why slots are addictive, what elements in particular appeal to players and expands on theories such as the “near miss” concept which is particularly interesting, especially considering I have always wondered if online slots are programmed to display near misses specifically.

The article is very wordy but when you start reading it, if you are into this type of thing, it is a superb read. You can read it here.

Some of his findings relating to familiarity and player acquisition also tie in quite nicely with my thoughts on the plethora of film and movie themed slots we have seen recently.

On a similar topic, I remember reading this article on the role that sounds play in the attractiveness of slots. Another interesting read but less depth than the interview above.

IGT's Cleopatra Slot

Cleopatra Slot: An Old Classic – Or Maybe Not!

You may be wondering why I am writing a review of one of the oldest and most popular online casino slots ever in late 2014! IGT’s Cleopatra slot is an ageless classic, loved for its simplicity: 20 pay-lines, 15 free spins at 3x multiplier along with doubling wilds. Although it was itself a nod in the direction of Aristocrat’s Queen Of The Nile slot (video), the format has been endlessly copied on other games with less success. The curiously addictive ‘dang! dang! dang! as the three copper sphinx symbols drop in and trigger your bonus round will be familiar to the vast majority of slots players, even today.

The game started off as a land-based slot in casinos in North America and became very popular, so was one of the first IGT adaptations for online play, although due to U.S. banking laws forbidding online gaming transactions, ironically not for Americans. Now some of the lucky ones (or unlucky!) can play in New Jersey online.

The Problem with TV & Movie Themed Slots

Jurassic Park - Movie Slots

As a seasoned slot machine aficionado, I can’t help but notice, year-in and year-out, the amount of hype surrounding the ‘Next Big Game’. Developers such as IGT, WMS and online slots developers Microgaming and Playtech in particular like to wheel out some big name TV and Movie slots under licences which were, in most cases at least, not inexpensive.

One of the things that surprises me is how many of the movies, shows and brands used in slot games are dated! Sure, we see movie slots themed on more recent releases like “The Hangover” and “Kong” but for every one of those there are 2 or 3 based on old movies like “Ghostbusters” and “Jurassic Park“, TV shows of the day like “Game Of Thrones” and “Sex & The City” have spawned successful slots but are released alongside games based on the 70’s show “6 Million Dollar Man” and “I Love Lucy“. Even old board games get wheeled out: the ” Cluedo” and Monopoly slots being prime examples!

Now that;’s not to say old shows are old hat. The success of IGT’s “Wheel Of Fortune” slots are testament to the fact that big names work, irrespective of era. IGT’s Monopoly franchise (soon to find itself in competition with WMS’s new Monopoly slots licence) has been phenomenally successful in land based casinos, less-so online. Playtech’s Marvel slots and Gladiator, WMS’s “Wizard Of Oz” slots and Microgaming’s “Dark Knight” and “Lord Of The Rings” slots series have all enjoyed some time in the PR limelight.

But with the few exceptions aside, when you actually look back at the large number of big-brand slots that have been released, how many actually STAY popular and last the test of time? The answer is, not many and one of the reasons for that is not so much boredom with the brand but what is arguably a necessary compromise in game play. Let me explain: (more…)

Monopoly Slots – All Change!

Historically, IGT have always held the licence for producing Monopoly slots for online casinos. However, from January 2015 WMS are licensed to produce the games and they are delving straight in with two early releases.

The ‘Super Monopoly Money’ game is the first release in January followed by ‘Monopoly Big Event’ at the end of Q1. Many of you will probably already know the Big Event Monopoly slots from land-based casinos in the U.S but for those who don’t, these are generally big game affairs with multi-player positions and big screen animations combining into a more social affair.

How this will translate to online play will be interesting. WMS are known for being innovative and their existing online slots portfolio has really muscled it’s way into the hearts of players. Games like the Wizard Of Oz Ruby Slippers and Zeus III along with the more recent Colossal Reels slots and the excellent Raging Rhino have become real favorites with both offline and online slots players. There is no reason to think that their Monopoly slots won’t do just as well.

I fully expect them to contrast sharply to the rather tepid IGT games. While IGT have released around 8 Monopoly games online (you can play one of their first Monopoly slots here), none of them have really caught the imagination. They aren’t all bad games – just lacking in excitement in my opinion. I am yet to hear if these games will stay online alongside the WMS Monopoly games or whether the licence has switched: guess we’ll find out soon!

More information is sketchy at this time but if you want to keep abreast of developments, bookmark this page and I will update Online Casinos & Slots as soon as I get more details on the new games.

New Slots 2014

2014 New Slots Review – Crackers Or Turkeys?

As we wind up for the festive season, so we can look back on the main releases of the year past. It has been a year of vastly improved choice, with many casinos available to UK players now offering a whole plethora of software, for example Bally, Aristocrat and WMS which was previously available on very few sites. The now-defunct Jackpot Party, once the sole provider of WMS slots to us in the UK has been taken over and re-branded Slots Magic and their games are now provided by Sky Vegas, MrSmith, Bet355 and Virgin Games to name but a few WMS providers.

Why do we mention WMS? Well leaving aside the plethora of new Colossal reels slots, their 4096-way Raging Rhino game (my game of choice on my annual pilgrimage to the Encore in Vegas!) has taken players by storm, and is without doubt the hit of 2014. A high-variance beast capable of hits paying several thousand x stake with the stacked symbols and wild multipliers in the bonus round, and can also pay big in the base game. The popularity of the game has surprised many, but not the experienced player who has sampled Bruce Lee and the Wizard Of Oz slots. There is also a slimmed-down version with 5 reels by Bally named ‘ThunderHorn’.

The provider of the largest platform Microgaming has needless to say not been idle. They tend to release games with less fanfare than their up-and-coming rivals Netent, who often promote new releases with free spins via their casinos. So, we have seen several new MG 3-reel games to replace the AWP’s which were mysteriously pulled a few months back such as Hiphopapotamus and Treasure Ireland. These however are stocking-fillers for their download client. The big titles are their branded games Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 plus the innovative Today’s Weather. (more…)

Betfair Online Casino Goes Live in New Jersey!

Finally, after years of waiting for regulated and licensed online casino gambling, the wait for New Jersey residents is over! With licences now issued, one of the first names to set up a New Jersey online casino is the big UK gambling brand Betfair, in association with Trump Plaza (AC).

Using the Game Account platform with 24 table games and a relatively small number of very decent slot games like Cleopatra, Davinci Diamonds, Monopoly (all IGT), Roaming Reels, 50 Dolphins and a range of Ainsworth (Aristocrat style) and Incredible Tech slots, the initial offering is relatively small but set to expand pretty rapidly.

At present, only residents of New Jersey can sign up to take advantage of the $10 no-deposit bonus plus $300 first-deposit bonus and even this involves downloading geo-location software and providing the relevant ID (this is now the norm for any US-facing legal and regulated casino).

Players can receive their winnings via check, wire or directly in person from the Trump Plaza cashier itself in Atlantic City.

If you live in New Jersey and want to be among the first to play online casino games for real in a licensed and regulated environment, click here to play at Betfair casino.
