What is it about Novomatic slot games? The Super-V+ and Multi Gaminator machines are gradually starting to dominate the UK land-based casinos I frequent and I’m happy about it. But it’s weird ‘cos the games are old-skool and I tend to like glitzy, jazzy eye candy so why do I LOVE the Gaminator games so much?
Take Sizzling Hot Deluxe for example – it’s like some throwback to the fruit machines of the 1980’s to look at. It’s using all the old JPM and Barcrest style fruit symbols but it has 2 extra reels and no feature board! Why would I even look at it? Then there’s the Ultra Hot slot and Xtra Hot. OK, so these bring a little something extra to the table but they still look like they’d be at home in the backfrop of an episode of Fools & Horses.
The simpe truth of the matter is that Novomatic seem to be quite clever. While IGT, WMS and the like are making Vegas-style slot machines (and very successfully too), Novomatic have realised that not every market is quite ready to just jump on them straight off the bat. Here in the UK, we know fruities. We like fruits, we grew up with fruits and f**k it we’re gonna have fruits! So what have they done? They’ve bridged the gap the clever so-and-so’s and now people like me, with my pub fruit machine background, well…I’m playing Novomatics!
And now they’re online too!
The upshot of this marketing is that games like Book Of Ra, Dolphin’s Pearl and the oh-so-streaky Katana slot are now among my favourite slots whether I am playing online at somewhere like Star Games or on the Grosvenor Casinos website or if I am in land-based, shuffling my way around the Gaminators at Rendezvous in Brighton or Casino At The Empire in London’s West End. And IGT? Not getting a look-in right now I’m afraid. Although I will be back at some point I just know it.
The slightly ironic thing is that games like Sizzling Hot Deluxe and Xtra Hot have become firm favourites with players in other European countries too Germany, Poland and Austrian players seem to love these games judging from the forums I frequent. And I’m pretty sure that the old JPM fruit machines (which you can actually play online on the Bet365 games site now incidentally) and Barcrest’s games were never a fixture in German Bierkellers! So what’s with that?
Meh…quite frankly, who cares! Slot machines aren’t about history, they are about entertaining you and providing you with enough dosh to get through the day and maybe with a few luxuries. Or they are about losing all your money and wishing you’d never set eyes on the things. Until tomorrow. Then it starts over again. Sizzling Hot Deluxe will not be featuring in my dreams but it will be part of my routine when I am online, looking for some expensive entertainment.
