I just returned from a trip to Vegas where I stayed at Encore for the 4th year in a row. Now I actually go there to play Spin Poker mainly – I just love that game – but I do like to take a break and wander round from time to time checking out the new slots, especially those from IGT and WMS. A couple of my old favorites had all but disappeared from the Encore floor – Bruce Lee had gone totally and Zeus II (Super Respin) had been shoved up the far end. At least the Wizard Of Oz Ruby Slippers games were still in the same place!
Also interesting to note that the fairly recently-released and somewhat epicly grandeuse Lord Of The Rings Slots had gone to be replaced by some pretty average-looking 3d reels version. But the discovery of the trip was WMS Gaming’s “Colossal Reels” games, Spartacus, L’il Red, Van Helsing and Forbidden Dragons.
Of those, Spartacus was the one that caught my eye (being a history buff and fan of the recent and somewhat gory TV series) and you can see it in more detail above. It’s hard to explain the Colossal Reels concept – easier to watch the video! In the case of Spartacus & L’il Red, the key feature is the expanding and transferring wilds that shift from reel to reel, not only in the bonus free spin feature but when they appear stacked in the base game.
The great thing about the Colossal Reel games – or at least, Spartacus anyway – is that WMS have managed to get the balance right between getting a decent session for your money and being able to win large amounts. They are exciting games that don’t eat your bankroll too fast and anyone who knows WMS well will know that their games normally can be real money eaters and rarely pay big.
Unfortunately, being new and all (this article was wriiten in October 2012*), the WMS Colossal Slots are not available to play online, even at WMS’s own Jackpot Party casino (see a full review) but they surely have to be on the “to do” list at some stage! We will probably see some more G+ games first I guess as Kronos is already online (click here for a full list) and the Zeus 3 slot has to be earmarked but I can’t wait for the Spartacus slot to join them. Seriously impressed!
* Update, July 2013: WMS have now released the first two Colossal Reels slots online: The Kiss game was the first of their Colossal slots to hit Jackpot Party casino in May with Spartacus joining it in July 2013! Rock on!
